Policy Owner: Centre Quality Lead
1. Purpose
This policy sets out the Centre's commitment to the continuing professional development of all staff who deliver, assess, or quality-assure OTHM qualifications. CPD ensures that the Centre's staff maintain and develop the subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and assessment competence needed to provide a high-quality learner experience.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all Tutors, Assessors, and Internal Quality Assurers.
3. CPD Expectations
Every Tutor, Assessor, and IQA is expected to:
- Engage in CPD activities relevant to their role for a minimum of 30 hours per academic year.
- Maintain a personal CPD log recording all activities.
- Apply learning from CPD to their practice.
- Discuss their CPD progress with the Centre Quality Lead at least twice per year.
4. What Counts as CPD?
The Centre recognises a broad range of activities:
Formal
- Accredited courses and qualifications (including Assessor and IQA qualifications)
- OTHM webinars, briefings, and standardisation events
- Conferences and professional workshops
- Online courses from recognised providers
Informal
- Peer observation of teaching or assessment, with reflective discussion
- Participation in the Centre's standardisation meetings
- Reading and research in the relevant subject area
- Reflective practice (documented)
- Mentoring or being mentored
- Review of EQA reports and action planning
- Developing or revising teaching and assessment materials
5. Individual Development Plan (IDP)
Each staff member maintains an Individual Development Plan, reviewed with the Centre Quality Lead. The IDP identifies:
- Current strengths
- Areas for development
- Specific CPD objectives for the coming year
- Planned activities and timelines
- How the learning will be applied
6. Centre Support
The Centre supports staff CPD by:
- Providing funding for approved CPD activities, within the annual CPD budget
- Allocating time within working hours for CPD
- Organising internal standardisation meetings and training sessions
- Providing access to online CPD resources and OTHM guidance materials
- Recognising CPD achievement in performance reviews
7. CPD Records
Each staff member maintains a CPD log recording:
- Date and duration of the activity
- Description
- Learning outcomes or reflections
- Evidence (certificate, attendance record, notes)
- How the learning has been applied
CPD logs are available for inspection by the Centre Quality Lead and by OTHM/EQAs upon request.
8. CPD and Quality Improvement
CPD needs identified through IQA sampling, EQA feedback, or learner feedback are fed into the Centre's quality improvement planning. Relevant CPD activities are prioritised.
9. Policy Review
This policy is reviewed annually.
